Bailong Sky Elevator, China

The Bailong Elevator is the world’s largest exterior elevator. At over 1,000 feet tall, this elevator looms high midway up a cliff overlooking a valley far below. Moreover, the elevator is mostly glass, affording passengers a dizzying view to the depths below. It is claimed to be the highest and heaviest outdoor elevator in the world. It took 3 years to construct, between 1999 to 2002.

Bailong Elevator has set three Guinness world Records
·         World’s tallest full-exposure outdoor elevator
·         World’s tallest double-deck sightseeing elevator
·         World’s fastest passenger traffic elevator with biggest carrying capacity

The elevator is at the World Heritage listed Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Zhangjiajie, in the north of south China’s Hunan Province, is China’s first national forest park, and was listed as a World Heritage site in 1992.
The structure consists of a 154-meter deep underground shaft and a 172-meter aboveground derrick. Three double-story glass elevators run abreast up the side of the cliff to a plateau near Shuiraosimen, one of the key scenic spots in the park. It takes about two minutes to complete the journey from the base of the cliff to the top. Each elevator can carry 50 people per trip, with a total daily capacity of about 18,000 people.
