Bagan, Burma - Discovering India

Bagan (or Pagan) is an ancient city in Burma. It was the capital of several ancient kingdoms in Burma. It is located about 90 miles from Mandalay. It has a few other titles as well:
·         Arimaddana: City of the enemy crusher
·         Tambadipa: Land of copper
·         Tassadessa: Parched land

Bagan has over 2200 pagodas and is a year round destination. There are flights from Yangon, Chiang May & Seam Reap (Cambodia). It also has a host of hotels, from guest houses to 4* deluxe. Sightseeing tours can be conducted by car, horse carriage or bicycles. A sunset cruise in the nearby river is a highlight. Mount Popa (50 kms away) houses a monastery on the top with 777 steps to climb to reach the top. The ruins of Bagan cover over 16 sq. kms. And most ruins are over 1700 years old.

During the power years, there were more than 5,000 pagodas there.
